Symposium -- all wrong

07/28/2004

Okay, having been to many a symposium, it’s clear to me that we’ve got the whole idea wrong according to the primary definition in Webster’s:

Main Entry: sym-po-sium Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural sym-po-sia; orsiums Etymology: Latin, from Greek symposion, from sympinein to drink together, from syn- + pinein to drink—more at POTABLE 1: a convivial party (as after a banquet in ancient Greece) with music and conversation

Where’s the music?? Where’s the drinking?? Where’s the fun??

Considering that the Summer Olympics are being held in Athens this year, I think it’s only appropriate to launch an initiative to create a true symposium in the original Greek sense of the word.

We can even talk about some software development topics while we’re at it! Write me if you’re interested.
